Homemade ice cream for dogs and cats: Simple recipes to combat heatwaves

When summer heats up, we all crave something cool, and our pets feel the same way. Seeing them seek out tiled floors or pant in the living room during the hottest hours of the day is a clear sign that they need a boost to regulate their temperature.

Making homemade "ice creams" or frozen treats is not only a great way to keep them hydrated without them noticing, but it also keeps them entertained for a good while.

However, don't give them human ice cream (sugar, dairy, and xylitol can be very bad for them). Here are several 100% safe and super easy ideas to prepare at home.

Cold recipes for dogs: Flavor and fun

For dogs, the texture of biting or licking something cold is a real treat.

1. Chicken broth and apple popsicle:

   • Boil some chicken breast with only water (no salt, onion, or garlic).

   • Let the broth cool, add small seedless apple pieces, and pour it into an ice cube tray or a freezable dog toy made of rubber.

2. Creamy banana and yogurt ice cream:

   • Blend half a ripe banana with a couple of tablespoons of unsweetened, lactose-free natural yogurt (or plain Greek yogurt).

   • Divide it into small molds. It's great for an afternoon creamy snack.

Cold recipes and ideas for cats: For picky eaters

Cats are much more particular about smells and textures, so preparations should be simple and have aromas they recognize instantly.

1. Tuna sorbet in its own juice:

   • Take a can of natural tuna (low in salt) or their favorite wet food in a can.

   • Mix the contents with a little water, blend it lightly, and freeze it in an ice cube tray.

Important tips before serving

• Little by little: Don't give them a huge amount all at once, especially if it's their first time trying something so cold, to avoid an upset stomach.

• Be careful with direct ice: If you're giving a dog a large ice cube made of plain water, wet it a little under the tap before giving it to them to prevent their tongue from sticking to it due to the extreme cold.
