Guide to preparing your home for your pet during heatwaves
Spending the day at home during a heatwave can be exhausting, and even more so for our pets who wear a built-in "fur coat" all year round. If you work outside or your apartment gets very hot throughout the day, creating cool havens at home is key for them to rest peacefully.
You don't need to have the air conditioning on full blast 24 hours a day. There are small changes in layout and simple accessories that can turn any room into an oasis for them.
1. Move their resting areas to cool rooms
In winter, we want the bed to be near the sun's radiation, but in summer, you have to do the exact opposite:
-
Look for north-facing rooms or interior areas where direct sun doesn't hit (hallways, bathrooms, or areas with tiled floors).
-
If their usual bed is too soft or warm, you can place cooling mats or simply leave them free space on the uncovered tile floor.

2. Strategic hydration points throughout the house
Don't limit yourself to just one water bowl in the kitchen. In hot months, having to cross the entire house to drink can make them lazy, especially senior cats or dogs.
-
Distribute at least two or three points with fresh water.
-
If you have felines, placing one of the cat fountains in the room where they spend the most hours will ensure they hear the gurgling of the water and stay constantly hydrated.
-
For dogs, have dog and cat bowls that are wide and easy to clean.

3. Blinds down and cross ventilation
A basic but super effective trick:
-
During the central hours of the day (12:00 to 18:00 h), lower the blinds or draw thick curtains on windows where the sun hits.
-
Leave interior doors open so that air can circulate freely and so your pet can choose which corner of the house they feel most comfortable in as the day progresses.
With a couple of adjustments at home and the right accessories, your furry friends will spend the hottest days of the year relaxed, cool, and stress-free.
