Indoor Games for Dogs and Cats: How to Keep Them Entertained at Home When It's Hot
There are full summer days when opening the front door literally feels like opening an oven. On those afternoons when the asphalt is burning and running around in the park is completely out of the question, it's normal to ask yourself: what do I do now with my dog or cat so they don't get bored stiff?
Boredom in pets quickly translates into stress, untimely barking, crazy dashes down the hallway, or a cat trying to knock everything off the tables.
The good news is that tiring your pet's mind uses as much or more energy than a long walk, and best of all, you can do it in the shade with the air conditioning or fan on.
For dogs: Mental stimulation and frozen treats
Dogs experience the world through their sense of smell. When they can't run outside, a bit of nose work at home relaxes them a lot and releases tension very naturally.
1. The functional "ice cream" trick
If you have interactive or rubber refillable dog toys, summer is their golden age. Try filling them with a little wet food, low-sodium cream cheese, or a touch of peanut butter (xylitol-free and sugar-free) and put them in the freezer for a few hours. They'll spend more than half an hour focused on getting it out, they'll stay cool, and they'll be completely exhausted after the effort.
2. Treasure hunt on the rug
Grab a couple of their favorite treats (or suitable fruit pieces like apple or watermelon), hide them under a crumpled blanket or scattered in corners of the living room, and tell them to search. You'll see how it immediately activates their olfactory instinct without any physical effort.
For cats: Awaken the hunter within
Although felines spend much of the day sleeping to conserve energy when it's hot, at some point in the afternoon or evening they get an energy burst.
1. Short but intense play sessions
Don't expect your cat to play for half an hour straight in 30-degree weather. It's much better to do micro-sessions of 5 or 10 minutes at dusk. Cat toys like wands with feathers or ribbons are perfect for simulating a real hunt without them having to make big jumps that would overheat them too much.
2. Floating ice cubes
Fill a large bowl with a couple of inches of water and add a couple of ice cubes (or a very light floating ball). Their natural curiosity will make them try to fish them out with their paws, entertaining themselves while getting wet and cooling their paw pads almost without realizing it.
The perfect rest after play
After a while of mental stimulation or light play, all they'll want to do is fall asleep for a nap. And here, the environment where they rest matters more than we think.
In the warmer months, very plush or fleece beds tend to accumulate too much heat. Make sure their dog bed or their cat beds are in the most ventilated area of the house. If necessary, look for options with breathable fabrics or cooling mats so they don't end up sleeping on the hard floor looking for the cool tile.
Keeping them active without getting hot is possible
Spending the summer at home doesn't have to be boring for you or them. With a couple of simple scent-based activities, good dog and cat toys adapted to their age, and a cool spot to rest, you'll ensure they enjoy the summer safe and happy.
